Toronto double shooting appears random: police

ONTARIO

-

A photographer and an employee in Toronto’s financial district were gunned down in their Range Rover near Queen Street West early yesterday in what police say appears to be a random shooting. Although carjacking has been raised as a possible motive, Dylan Ellis, 25, and Oliver Martin, 25, were still in their seatbelts when they were killed shortly after midnight, police said. Toronto police Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said said neither Mr. Martin, a graduate of a southern Ontario university who worked in the financial district, nor Mr. Ellis, a photographer and graduate of a Quebec college, have any history of criminal activity. Det. Sgt. Giroux said the men had left a home in the area, near Richmond and Niagara streets, after watching the NBA finals with friends, but then returned for an “innocent” reason. They were sitting in the front seat, waiting for somebody to come to the vehicle, when they were shot. Det. Sgt. Giroux said there is almost certainly video surveillance of the crime.
