Instant replay in MLB picture
MCLEAN, Virginia •
Major League Baseball could implement instant replay as early as August 1 of this year, according to a published report yesterday.
MLB approached the World Umpires Association earlier this week to request that instant replay be used on ‘‘boundary calls,’’ according to USA Today.
Citing two high-ranking umpiring officials, the paper reported that MLB wants to implement replay to determine if potential home runs are fair or foul and to rule whether a homer clears an outfield wall.
MLB downplayed the report in a statement issued by spokesman Rich Levin yesterday.
‘‘It’s all premature,’’ Levin said. ‘‘Nothing has been decided yet.’’
During annual meetings last November, major-league general managers voted overwhelmingly in favor of asking MLB to look into the possibility of using replay for boundary calls.
