Ottawa co-producer thrilled by win

-

A childrens’ program co-produced by an Ottawa theatre company took a top prize at the 29th annual Banff World Television Festival this week.

How Gimquat Found Her Song, coproduced by Ottawa’s Odyssey Theatre, Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Trace Pictures, won Best Children’s Program, beating entries from Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

“It incredulous because we’re surprised the film ever got made,” said Odyssey Theatre’s artistic director Peter Duschenes, who also wrote the script and played the role of the wizard.

“We did not expect to win because the competition is pretty fierce.”

The film, which combines live-action and animation, tells the story of an awkward bird that is guided on a musical journey by a mysterious wizard. To a view a trailer of the program go to www.platypustheatre.com.
