GETTING THERE: Several airlines, including Air Canada and Continenta­l, offer direct flights from Ottawa to New York. Despite being in another state, Newark is Manhattan’s most convenient airport and features quick $15 train service to New York’s Penn Station on New Jersey Transit ( WHERE TO STAY: New York’s hotels are known for high prices. Pay close attention, as rates can change during your stay. I find the following to offer good value: ■ Hotel Roger Williams:

Exquisitel­y hip, funky boutique hotel, featuring “just us girls” packages and more. Near the Empire State Building and Macy’s. Off-season direct rates from $275; you may find rates from $199 at sites such as (131 Madison Ave. at 31st St.; hotelroger­ ■ Roger Smith Hotel:

Boutique property with a traditiona­l style. Suites may be a great value for families. Excellent restaurant with a Swedish chef.
