‘Sadist’ who raped teen begs forgiveness
A man who was diagnosed as a “sexual sadist” for posing as a police officer to kidnap and rape a teenager and hold her captive for two days, asked for forgiveness in court Thursday, a request the victim’s family dismissed. Gerard Baumgarte spoke in court in Red Deer for the first time. “I just want to say I’m sorry,” he said tearfully — one of his first displays of emotion during the trial. “I beg forgiveness from the victim.” Baumgarte pleaded guilty to several charges, including kidnapping, unlawful confinement, sexual assault, impersonating a police officer and assault with a weapon. He is expected to be sentenced Saturday. The Crown is seeking a life sentence, while the defence argues for 10 to 15 years.
