Dubreuil, Hanly skate to medals


Laurent Dubreuil of Lévis, Que., was crowned 500-metre champion and Calgary’s Kate Hanly took the bronze medal in the 1,000 metres of the Essent ISU world junior speedskati­ng championsh­ips at the Meiji Hokkaido Tokachi Oval in Obihiro, Japan. Dubreuil won the event on both Friday and Saturday and had a combined time of 71.12 seconds, 0.65 better than Tsubasas Hasegawa of Japan. Alexandre Déry of Lévis, Que., was 20th in 77.16. Hanly had a time of 1:18.82 in the 1,000 metres, behind Japan’s Miho Takagi (1:17.69) and the Czech Republic’s Karolina Erbanova (1:18.14).
