Ottawa artist makes shortlist for Canadian Painting Competition

Ottawa Citizen - - ARTS & LIFE - PETER SIMPSON

The finalists for the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition have been revealed, and there’s an Ottawa name on the list.

Ottawa artist Colin Muir Dorward is among 15 finalists for the $25,000 prize. (Two honourable mentions get $15,000 each.) The winners will be announced Nov. 29.

Dorward’s work may not be immediately familiar to art fans in Ottawa. His webpage shows a long list of exhibitions in Montreal and Vancouver, and no showings in the national capital.

The finalists are categorized by region, and other Central Canadian finalists include Aleksander Hardashnakov and Vanessa Maltese, in Toronto, David Hucal in Guelph, and Jenna Faye Powell in Sarnia. Ottawa’s Amy Schissel was a finalist last year.

Paintings by the 15 finalists will be on exhibit at the Power Plant in Toronto and online at rbc.com/paintingcompetition.

The 2012 paintings will join RBC’s Canadian art collection.
