❚ Feb. 1, midnight, is the deadline for the National Capital Youth Writing Contest, sponsored by the Canadian Authors Associatio­n — National Capital Region. The contest is open to National Capital Region youth ages 13 (as of Sept. 1, 2012) to 17 (as of Feb. 2, 2013). There are first, second and third prizes of $250, $125 and $75. Stories must be in English, a maximum of 2,000 words, original and previously unpublishe­d. The entry fee is $5 per story or a CAA-NCR Workshop Coupon. Make cheques or money orders payable to CAA — NCR and designate NCWC. Mail entries to: Attention: Sherrill Wark, Youth Short Story Contest, 163 Bell St., N., Box 57081, Ottawa, ON, K1R 7E1. ❚ Feb. 1 is also the deadline to enter the 26th Annual National Capital Writing Contest in the categories of Short Story and Poetry.

The awards are sponsored by the Canadian Authors Associatio­n. A first prize of $500, second prize, $250, and third prize, $100, will be awarded in each category. The contest is open to members of CAANCR and/or residents of the National Capital Region. Maximum length for the Short Story category is 2,500 words. Poetry, not haiku, should be a maximum of 60 lines, including title and blank lines. Submission­s must be the original, unpublishe­d work of the entrant. Each entry must be in English, typed, on 8½” x 11” paper, one side only. Entry fee is $10 per story or $10 for up to three poems. There is no limit on the number of entries. Members of CAA-NCR are entitled to one free entry in one category. ❚ Everyone is invited to come and hear the voices of mothers, wives, sisters and sisters-in-law — the voices of In the Wings: Stories of Forgotten Women, 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Ottawa Public Library, 120 Metcalfe St. Admission is free. In the Wings is a collection of 17 stories featuring the women behind such historical and literary figures as William Shakespear­e, Woodrow Wilson, Pablo Casals and Walt Disney.
