The nuts and bolts of becoming premier,

- — Reported by Joanne Chianello

Is Kathleen Wynne automatically the new premier?

No. Right now, she’s the premierdesignate until Ontario’s lieutenantgovernor swears her in and after Dalton McGuinty formally hands in his resignation.

When will that happen?

Likely not until next week, but certainly before Feb. 19, which is the date on which Wynne promised to call the legislature back to work.

When will she choose a cabinet?

Wynne said she’ll be working on putting a cabinet together over the next few days as she wants to have her ministers in place before Feb. 19. However, Wynne said she won’t make any final decisions on the cabinet makeup until after she meets with her Liberal caucus on Tuesday.

Who’ll be in that cabinet?

“I’d be happy to serve in cabinet with all of my colleague-candidates,” Wynne said Sunday. Those “colleague-candidates” include Dr. Eric Hoskins, who’s seen as a possible health minister, Charles Sousa, who is speculated to be the next finance minister, Harinder Takhar and Glen Murray.

Who’s helping with all this?

A few weeks ago, Wynne decided she needed a transition team “because you just never know what’s going to happen.” And good thing, too, as her victory at the leadership convention occurred just two weeks before the legislature is recalled. Wynne asked her “friend and former colleague” Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing and Liberal house leader, to lead her transition team. The other members of the team will be announced “in the next couple days.”
