Will history repeat?

Congratulations to Kathleen Wynne — she has been granted her wish to become the first female premier of Ontario.

I believe the adage “be careful of what you wish for” surely applies in her case. I feel that the Liberal party of Ontario has done to Wynne exactly what the federal Progressive Conservative Party did (in 1993) to Kim Campbell, who became leader of the federal Progressive Conservative party and the first female prime minister of Canada when Brian Mulroney stepped down. Mulroney’s actions had so brought the Conservatives down in polls that in the next election they were virtually wiped off the political map. Campbell took the blame, lost the leadership of the party and was never a force in politics again.

I feel the same thing will play out now in the provincial Liberal party. Premier Dalton McGuinty’s actions have so brought the Liberals down in polls that if God himself were leading the party they could not get elected in Ontario for some time to come.

I believe Wynne will take the fall for McGuinty’s failures and will surely be asked to resign as leader at the first opportunity. She should enjoy her success while she can. I think it will be short-lived.
