ELIZABETH RESIDENCE IN KISUBI, UGANDA

CANHAVE celebrates the Opening of the Elizabeth Residence in Uganda

In early February, CANHAVE’s newly- constructed Elizabeth Residence in Kisubi, Uganda, will open its doors to 48 young women attending the adjoining Vocational School. The CANHAVE seven-care property, located about 7 kilometers from the Entebbe Airport, opened first in 2008 to teach trade and entrepreneurial skills in carpentry and joinery, catering and hotel management, hairdressing and computers. Since then, the female students have been living in temporary quarters in one of the workshops.

Thanks to many Ottawa citizens, the young women will now have a beautiful, safe two-storey dormitory to live in, while they hone their skills and become independent contributing Ugandan citizens. Within CANHAVE’s 12-member Ottawa-based board, Dr. Grete Hale has led the funding campaign for this residence by making the case for the safety, comfort and protection of young Ugandan women. The funds she has raised have all been sent to Uganda for this capital investment.

Grete’s broad and deep experience in business, volunteerism and various causes within the community has demonstrated that when we give individuals a helping hand, they respond by themselves helping others. CANHAVE thanks Grete and all those many friends and volunteers in the Ottawa area, who have helped make this dream of a home for young women a reality.
