Walk raises $249,000 for Alzheimer Society
Walk for Memories, Ottawa’s premier indoor fundraising walk, broke all records this year, raising over $249,000 with the participation of 592 walkers and 85 teams.
John Wilson raised the highest amount from an individual with $7,615. Honourable mentions to our second-place individual winner, Chris Donahoe, with $6,957, and our third-place individual winner, Arnie Vered, with $6,046. Our congratulations as well to the top corporate team of Team Scotiabank for raising $22,028 that has been topped up by its head office with an additional $15,000, and our top non-corporate team, Renfrew Memory Makers, for raising $15,635.
The success of this 18th annual event, held in support of the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County on Jan. 27 inside Carleton University Fieldhouse, was made possible with the generosity and hard work of its Leading the Walk sponsor, Collins Barrow Chartered Accountants, dozens of other sponsors, thousands of donors and over 150 event volunteers who combined forces to make an incredible difference in supporting families living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
Much thanks as well to Carleton University for providing in-kind sponsorship as well as a welcoming and collaborative environment.
As well, our thanks to the following generous sponsors: Porter Airlines, CTV Ottawa, Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT, Giant Tiger, Carleton University, Fifty-Five Plus Magazine, Revera Retirement Living, Home Instead Senior Care, We Care Home Health Services, Facilities Commercial, Riverstone Retirement Communities, Billings Lodge Retirement Community, Perley Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, Thomas Cavanagh Construction Limited, Beacon Heights Retirement Residence, Kelly Funeral Homes, Great West Life, VIA Rail, Davidson Violette & Associates Inc., Walls and Ceilings Contractors Association, and C&M Electric.
The Alzheimer Society is also grateful to our event’s host, Kurt Stoodley of CTV Morning Live.
In Ottawa and Renfrew County, there are approximately 15,000 people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. This number does not include family members and caregivers who must also cope with the effects of dementia. The Alzheimer Society is here to help.
