Sleek styles, patterns and birds take centre stage

- KELLY KENT

What do birds, metals, modern botanicals and duckegg blues have in common? They’re all hot decor trends that can be found at Newbury Interiors.

Representatives from suppliers to the home decor and design store showed off their spring collections at a recent event at the store’s new Trainyards location.

Kravet Fabrics ( kravetcanada. com) is featuring bright, colourful and bold patterned fabrics by designer and potter Jonathan Adler. Adler’s spring collection includes large geometric patterns, like the ones in his pottery-inspired fabric called Pots, which is printed with purples, reds and greens in assorted vase-like shapes, as well as a few throwback fire-stripe patterns in oranges and blues.

Adler is bringing back to life some forgotten fabric trends by incorporating cut velvets and embroidery into designs, says Kravet’s Paul Smith.

Maureen Miller from Maxwell Fabrics ( maxwellfabrics.com) showcased many of the same current trends — bold, bright colours in striking patterns like stripes or herringbones — as well as a few new ones, such as metallics and modern florals, adding that “birds are also really trendy right now.” Maxwell has updated their versatile neutral fabrics with new blends and added a line of leather with some offbeat designs like purple snakeskin.

Canadian company Geovin Furniture ( geovin.com), meanwhile, stayed away from wild and unexpected: what’s hot right now is big, sturdy, sleek and modern furniture. Spokeswoman Cara Hancock says the company’s new lines of furniture, which are all named after New York neighbourhoods, focus on the SoHo collection: solid maple furniture in a variety of finishes, from dark black stains to pastel paints.
