Merchants offer discounts to cash-strapped students

Ottawa’s starving students need not fear the ramen noodle diet any longer. Thanks to several grocery stores and restaurant­s across the city, there are discounts available to them on everything from groceries to all-youcan-eat buffets.

On specific nights of the week, grocery chains, including Loblaws and Sobeys, give post-secondary students a break at the checkout by lopping 10-per-cent off their grocery bill.

Similar discounts are also offered on everything from clothing to entertainm­ent.

Often all you need to do is ask and show a valid school ID.

Here are just a few examples of where students can save:

BULK CANDY AND MORE

Every Wednesday, Bulk Barn offers students 10-per-cent off their entire purchase, making it a perfect day to stock up on exam essentials: jelly beans, chocolate and dried fruit.

TWO EGGS OVER EASY

Located on Baseline Road across from College Square, Summerhays Grill is a student hot spot that offers a variety of discounts for its collegiate clientele. Students can get a breakfast special, including two eggs, bacon, home fries and toast for $2.49, or 20-per-cent off lunch and dinner entrées.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

Until April 30, Empire Theatres is making it affordable for college and university students to see a flick any day of the week by offering a special student combo for $12.99. It includes admission, a regular soft drink and a regular popcorn.

FREE FROZEN YOGURT

Menchie’s Canada is celebratin­g National Volunteer Week by giving teens who do volunteer work a cup of free frozen yogurt (value up to $5). Visit 80 George St. or 1537 Merivale Rd. from 4 p.m. to 6 p. m. on April 22 to 26 for a free tasty treat.

ARTS & CULTURE

The National Arts Centre is making live music, theatre and dance performanc­es more accessible to students by offering seasonal subscripti­ons to the NAC Orchestra, English and French theatre or dance and individual tickets for half price. ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT BUFFET

Every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tucker’s Marketplac­e in the By Ward Market, students can pile up their plates at a buffet brunch for $10.99 with the purchase of a drink. Get the same deal on dinner Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

COMPUTERS, LAPTOPS

Save as much as $300 off a Mac computer through Apple’s special education pricing. Just go to apple. ca and search your school to take advantage of this deal.

DESIGNER DUDS

Club Monaco may be a little pricey for the average student, but fashionist­as can get 20-per-cent off all clothing, including sale items at the Rideau Centre store. The discount, however, cannot be used with any special promotions.

AND MORE

The Student Price Card (SPC) offers a 10- to 40-per-cent discount at more than 100 stores, from American Eagle to Yogen Fruz. It costs $11 at spccard.ca and is valid for one year.
