Barber trims field for Ottawa Zone golf victory

Winner receives $1,800 top prize

Chris Barber defeated James Sperinck on the first playoff hole to win the TaylorMade-adidas Summer Open, the second event of the PGA of Canada Ottawa Zone tournament schedule, at Renfrew Golf Club on Friday.

Barber, from The Landings, received the $1,800 top prize, while Sperinck, from Camelot, received $1,200. Both golfers had shot 2-under-par 69 in regulation play.

In June at Prescott, Sperinck won the Spring Open, the first event on the schedule for club pros from Eastern Ontario and West Quebec.

Pembroke’s Alec Hubert was third on Friday with a 70, while Island Brae’s Drew Calver (71) placed fourth.

Ottawa Hunt’s Dave Kalil won the $500 top prize for the 50-plus seniors division by shooting a 3-over 74. He edged Mississipp­i’s Terry Kolar and Cedarhill’s Greg White by one stroke.

MÉNARD, GAGNON TIED ATOP DUKE

Alexander of Tunis winner Raoul Ménard of Pinegrove was at it again Friday, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to tie for top spot at the mid-point of the Duke of Kent men’s amateur golf tournament at Boischatel, Que.

Ménard, who claimed the Tunis championsh­ip at Royal Ottawa on Monday, shared first place with Michel Gagnon of the host club, Royal Quebec.

Lorette’s Charles-Etienne Demers was third at 68, with another 20 golfers at even par or better in the second part of Quebec’s triple-crown series. The final stage, the Quebec Amateur, will be played next week at Royal Montreal.

No golfer has ever won all three titles in the same season.

The leading golfer from the National Capital Region was Arnprior’s Dwight Reinhart, who was part of a group tied for fourth at 69.
