Summer chores around the house

- ANITA MURRAY

Summer is the best time to do a visual inspection of your home, looking for any potential problems and taking on home maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape. RND Construction offers the following checklist for your summer chores. ❚ Check the grading around the outside of your home for proper slope away from foundation walls. Raise the grade wherever needed to allow for proper drainage. ❚ Check your home’s exterior for things, like missing shingles, cracks in caulking and damaged weather stripping and repair. ❚ Clean or power-wash your siding. ❚ Check your air-conditioning unit and clean if necessary. ❚ Clean HRV filters and check/clean the outdoor intake. ❚ Check and clean your exterior dryer exhaust vent. ❚ Check and replace furnace filters. ❚ Inspect your wood-burning fireplace chimney and have it professionally cleaned if necessary. ❚ Check the basement floor drain and any other unused drains to ensure the p-traps contain water. Refill with water if necessary to avoid sewer gases backing up into your home. ❚ Clean and care for decks, patios or porches. Look for peeling paint, damaged stairs, etc.
