Some musical high notes
On the NAC stage: In November 1969 Cantata Singers became the first choir to perform with NACO. The choir has performed with the NACO every season since that year.
Messiah: Starting in 1970, the choir has performed this work at the NAC in 29 of its 50 years. This year’s performances are the 57th and 58th, respectively (most years the choir did two performances).
Carnegie Hall: In October 1980, Cantata performed Orfeo ed Eurydice at Carnegie Hall with the NACO and soloist Marilyn Horne.
Appearances at major music festivals: In 1976 Cantata Singers performed at the Guelph Spring Festival; in 1989, at the International Choral Festival in Toronto; and in 2011 and 2012, at Festival de Lanaudiere in Quebec. The choir won a special prize in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur
Choirs in 1990.
Tours: Performances in the Ottawa Valley, southern Ontario, the Maritimes, Southern Manitoba, Montreal, Hong Kong, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Austria, Hungary and Italy.
National Events: Highlights include Her Majesty’s Silver Jubilee visit to Parliament Hill in 1977; the installation of two governors general, Ed Schreyer and Jeanne Sauvé; singing for July 1 morning ceremonies on Parliament Hill; the first performance of the new O Canada on July 1, 1980; and performance at the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay on Parliament Hill.
Recordings: The choir has been recorded for broadcast by the CBC numerous times. The choir’s recording of O Canada was used by CBC for many years at the end of its broadcast day.
