Take a second-hand safari
Seasoned second-hand shopper and blogger Jo-Anne Lauzer ( Second
handsavvy.ca) has spent most of her life on the hunt for cool finds. The Vancouver woman will even help others by taking them on what she likes to call “second-hand safaris.”
Lauzer took some time to offer helpful hints for the rookie rummager.
FIVE TIPS
TO ANTIQUING:
1. Be prepared: Have an idea of what you are willing to pay. It helps to research what the going rates are for some items, Lauzer says.
2. Be mindful: “It is easy to get a bit lost in the moment with some bigger purchases,” she says. “Be mindful of what you can afford to pay and what you have room for.”
3. Be nice: “Although bartering is common practice, going too low or
being rude can be quite off-putting for sellers,” says Lauzer.
4. Be decisive: “Be spontaneous if you find something you love and can afford. If you go away to think about it, chances are, it will be gone by the time you come back.”
5. Be aware: Be careful when purchasing antiques online or at garage sales.
