In another email Wright notes: “Senator LeBreton agrees that Chris might not be fully on board.”
What’s clear from the emails — and somewhat frightening — is that PMO officials had no compunction changing or tampering with reports to suit their political goals, and found it “unbelievable” that Montgomery would stand in the way. But it is reassuring that through it all, one man saw right from wrong.
The RCMP report says in the end, Montgomery relented, the PMO got its way, and the internal economy committee report was whitewashed to remove any criticism of Duffy. One can only imagine how it must have felt for this lonely public servant to go against the wishes of a powerful group of Conservatives who believed their political lives were at stake.
It must have been a taxing experience for Montgomery, and the RCMP report says he has left his job and is moving out of Ontario for a private-sector job. Let us salute the one man who would not be corrupted. It is sad that a man of such extraordinary courage and integrity should be lost to public service.
