Welcome to Ogdensburg!

-

Ogdensburg, New York, on the shore of the beautiful St. Lawrence River, is an easy hour’s drive from Ottawa. Ogdensburg has a long history of trade and commerce with Canada, and the city’s merchants invite their northern neighbours to visit Ogdensburg to shop, dine and enjoy the beauty of this area of NewYork state. While a ferry once connected Ogdensburg and Prescott, Ontario, today the spectacular Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge links the two countries and provides easy access to many shops and restaurants. Here are a few shopping suggestions for your next trip to Ogdensburg:

Buster’s Sports Bar is a sports-themed, family-run restaurant popular for casual dining with visitors and Ogdensburg residents alike.

“We are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day of the week and offer a real family dining atmosphere,” said owner Terry Vernsey, who has been running the restaurant since 1995. “We have a huge menu with something for everyone.”

Ogdensburg’s No. 1 family restaurant offers daily specials, but it is Buster’s famous salad bar that really sets the restaurant apart. Billed as The Best Salad Bar in the North Country, Buster’s salad bar offers 20 feet of mouth-watering, good-to-eat food, offering something for everyone.

“Probably three-quarters of our customers partake in our salad bar,” saidT erry. “We have 40 different items, and everything is prepared fresh daily in-house.”

Buster’s also offers 12 different draft beers including Stella Artois, Samuel Adams, Guinness, and Blue Moon, a Belgian white ale, in addition to the regular draft fare. And at $3 a pint, Buster’s price can’t be beat.

Buster’s clientele comes from both the city of Ogdensburg and from further afield, according to Terry.

“We get a ton of hockey teams who play in Ogdensburg stopping in after their games. We also serve a lot of Canadian visitors, especially on weekends. Our Canadian visitors tell me they come over for gas, groceries, and to stop at Buster’s for a bite, and they still save $25-$30 over what they would pay at home. If they spend over $25 at Buster’s we’ll give them a bridge pass, so their trip home over the bridge is free.

“We’re the busiest restaurant in town, so we must be doing something right!”

Located at 1130 Patterson St., Buster’s is right off the highway and easy to find. For more information visit www.busterssportsbarny.com.

Since 2003, Michael Lira has been the owner/president of The UPS Store in Ogdensburg. As a locally owned and operated UPS store, Michael and his staff have the knowledge and expertise to handle all of his customers’ mailbox, packing, shipping and professional printing needs. Ogdensburg’s UPS Store specializes in package receiving services for Canadian customers.

“Our most popular service, by far, is package receiving for our Canadian customers,” said Michael.“Perhaps 98 per cent of our business involves this service, though we also do a lot of printing services for Canadian customers.”

With UPS’s package receiving services Canadians can have their items shipped to the Ogdensburg store via UPS, FedEx, the United States Postal Service or any other carrier service. The items can be picked up at the receiver’s convenience, and they don’t even need to have a UPS mailbox. There are no contracts to sign and no one to alert. All customers have to do is have their package shipped to the store with their name on it. There is no need to call UPS in advance; when they receive a shipment it will be stored in their warehouse until the customer is able to retrieve the item.

“This can be especially handy for our Canadian customers when a company refuses to ship to Canada or when it’s just too expensive to do so,” said Michael. “Canadian customers can save hundreds of dollars when their packages are shipped to our store.”

UPS charges a low $5 per package, no matter what the size or weight of the items. If the item stays there for more than one week, UPS will continue to store it for $5 per week.

The UPS Store in Ogdensburg is one busy place. Last year, according to Michael, they received over 15,000 packages. This year, he said, they are on schedule to receive around 20,000. Despite this high volume, customer lineups to claim their packages are short.

“We have invested $15,000 into a newly designed computer system which allows our customers to receive their packages much more quickly than before,” said Michael. “We’re probably 10 times faster than we used to be.”

At Carbino’s Jewelry, the Carbino family has sold quality jewelry and provided quality service to Northern New York for over 100 years. Carbino’s Jewelry is currently owned and operated by Greg Carbino, who has worked in the jewelry business for over 30 years.

“We’ve been in business since 1898, so we have quite a following in the area,” said Greg. “We are also beginning to get a lot of Canadian customers.”

In recent years, one of the biggest sellers at Carbino’s is the Pandora line of bracelets. “Pandora is the hottest thing going,” said Greg. “We’ve been selling Pandora for seven years and people just love it. When we started carrying the Pandora line, my wife said, ‘Greg, you’re going to sell more of that than anything else,’ and she was right.”

Despite being a leading retailer of many popular jewelery lines, Greg said,“I tell people that we don’t really sell rings and watches. We sell love. People love each other and come and buy beautiful things for each other. Love is a language of actions, not words, and we all speak that language a bit differently.”

Carbino’s Jewelery offers a popular 20-minute education program on the intricacies of how to buy jewelery. “We teach the basic core of what our customers need to know. This seems to work really well for everyone, and nobody else offers this service.”

Until the end of December, Carbino’s is accepting Canadian money at par.

Carbino’s Jewelery is located at 304 Ford St. For more information visit www.carbinos.com.
