Farewell, Madiba
It is sad to learn that the father of democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela, has departed, leaving the entire nation in mourning. Madiba was an icon of great wisdom, courage, struggle and determination for leading the fight against minority rule in South Africa.
His leadership, charisma, audacity, empathy and tolerance for harsh treatment made him a very revered political figure in South Africa, and around the world. During his fight for justice, he spent 27 years of his life in prison, and as a free man, steered the country from apartheid to democracy. The most remarkable moment of the 20th century could be in 1990, when Mandela walked free from prison, and four years later, become the first black president of South Africa, proving that might does not always prevail.
Being a Nobel Peace laureate, he is regarded as a symbol of reconciliation and people the world over are proud of him. The world needs a few more Mandelas in the future to inspire and renew our hopes for conflict resolution and reconciliation.
His demise has created a sense of deep sadness among South African people who are left without their founding father. The whole world shares their sorrow and grief, praying that his soul will rest in peace. I extend my sympathies to his wife, children and relatives at this difficult time, and pray for his soul.
