Henderson again in golf spotlight

Teen wins Women’s Tour event, shoots way into Canadian Open

- GORD HOLDER

Wednesday was just another day in the golf spotlight for Brooke Henderson.

The 16-year-old amateur from Smiths Falls shot a bogey-free, 6-under-par 66 to win a Canadian Women’s Tour event at Niagara Falls, Ont., and it qualified her for what is now called the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open for the third consecutive year.

The latter tournament, a stop on the LPGA Tour, will take place at London, Ont., in late August.

Henderson, who on Sunday finished the Women’s U.S. Open as leading amateur and in a tie for 10th place overall, won a CN Women’s Tour event in Quebec in 2014 to qualify for her first Canadian Women’s Open. She didn’t win any of the three qualifying events last year, but finished high enough in the overall points standings to warrant a sponsor’s invitation.

She was tied for the lead after Tuesday’s opening round on the Battlefield course at the Legends on the Niagara club with Stephanie Connelly and trailed the U.S. pro by one stroke through four holes on Wednesday. However, Connelly fell back into a tie with a bogey on the fifth hole and Henderson took the lead for good with a birdie on the sixth.

Her older sister, Brittany, a pro who had caddied for Brooke in the Women’s U.S. Open, shot a 77 on Wednesday and tied for 24th at 151.

Also on Wednesday, Brooke Henderson moved up one spot to second overall in the world women’s amateur golf rankings.
