Is the World Cup low-tech fix in?
Re: Unlikely soccer star; When Declan Hill began investigating match-fixing in soccer a decade ago, a lot of people dismissed him as a sensationalist, June 21. It is truly amazing that a multibillion-dollar sporting event — the World Cup — can be held with no instant replay available for the use of officials.
Côte d’Ivoire lost a game that they should not have lost through a bad penalty call. Why could FIFA not have a simple rule: every red card, every penalty shot and every goal will be reviewed to ensure that the right call was made?
If they can do that with ice hockey with a much faster game with tight time restrictions, why not the World Cup?
I have lost interest in a sporting event that, through the lack of use of available technology, leaves itself open to charges of fixed matches and crooked referees.
Oh yes, I should mention that I love the game that I played for some 20 years and coached for a further 27. Bob Ryerson, Manotick
