MURRAY’S COACHING CAREER

-

1979-80: Coached Regina Pats of the WHL to a championsh­ip season.

1980: Hired by AHL’s Hershey Bears, earning Hockey News minor-league coach of the year honours.

1981: Took over Washington Capitals, a team he coached for seven full seasons, never failing to make the playoffs.

1984: Wins Jack Adams Trophy as NHL coach of the year.

1988-89: Fired as Washington Capitals’ head coach and replaced by younger brother Terry in January, 1990.

1990-1994: Becomes head coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. Named general manager in 1992-93 season. The Wings tally 100 points in 1993-94 NHL season.

1994-2000: As general manager of the Florida Panthers, Murray is the architect behind Florida’s surprise appearance in the Stanley Cup finals in 1995-96. Brother Terry is offered head coach job in 1998.

2001-2002: Named head coach of Anaheim Mighty Ducks and GM at season’s end. Credited for key components of the Stanley Cup team that beat the Murray-coached Ottawa Senators.

2003: Upstart Mighty Ducks reach the Stanley Cup final in Murray’s initial season as GM. 2004: Murray joins the Senators as the fifth head coach in modern history, replacing the fired Jacques Martin. Murray’s career record is 513-413-131. 2005: Murray’s father Clarence dies in Shawville, at 96.

2006-2007: Coaches Senators to Stanley Cup final, losing to Anaheim Ducks. June 18, 2007: Promoted to GM after John Muckler fired. February 2008: Fires friend and former assistant coach (and hand-picked successor as head coach) John Paddock. June 2008: Drafts Erik Karlsson 15th in the first round of the entry draft.

July 2013: Murray was unable to sign Daniel Alfredsson to a new contract and watched as the longtime captain signed with the Detroit Red Wings. January 2014: Senators give Murray a two-year contract extension.

July 1: Traded No. 1 centre and team captain Jason Spezza to the Dallas Stars for Alex Chiasson and two prospects.

July 7: Senators release a statement saying Murray, 71, is being treated for cancer.
