Kellie Ring of the Ottawa Gee-Gees was named winner of the Tracy McLeod Award for determination, perseverance and unwavering spirit as Ontario University Athletics handed out its annual women’s basketball honours on Wednesday. Ring averaged 7.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists in playing all 19 regularseason games for the GeeGees after losing large chunks of the previous two seasons after injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee. Ottawa head coach Andy Sparks said Ring had also played through two concussions, two ankle sprains, a broken toe and a broken arm over her three seasons on the team. GeeGees teammate Stephanie MacDonald was named a first-team all-star, while the second team included Ottawa’s Krista Van Slingerland and Lindsay Shotbolt of the Carleton Ravens. The Ravens’ Elizabeth Leblanc was named to the all-rookie team. The Lakehead Thunderwolves’ Jylisa Williams, who set OUA records for points in a game (50) and season (548), was named player of the year. Other award winners included: Korissa Williams, Windsor Lancers, top defensive player; and Bridget Atkinson, Guelph Gryphons, top rookie. The OUA men’s basketball award winners are to be announced today. On Tuesday, four Ravens received OUA men’s hockey honours.
