When Ottawa’s Dustin Cook won the World Cup Final men’s super-G alpine ski race in Meribel, France, the gold medal came with a sizable cheque of 35,000 Swiss francs or about $45,000 (Cdn). He was the top Canadian alpine skier in 22nd place on the men’s World Cup prize money list with more than $66,500.
The Greater Ottawa Fastball League has added an eighth franchise, the Ottawa Valley A’s. They will join Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric, Quyon Flyers, Micksburg Twins, Stittsville 56ers, Kanata Pirates, I4C Victory and Kars Aces for an 18-game season beginning the week of May 11.
University of Toronto grad student Charlotte Sider of Ottawa was named a CIS first team all-Canadian and helped the Varsity Blues earn the silver medal at the national women’s volleyball championship, losing to the University of Alberta 3-2 in the final. The seventh-seeded University of Ottawa lost its quarter-final to Alberta, but won its two consolation matches 3-0 and finished fifth.
Jori Mantha’s final men’s volleyball match for the McMaster University Marauders brought him his second straight bronze medal at the CIS national championship. McMaster downed Dalhousie University 3-0 in the thirdplace match. University of Montreal’s Philippe Carrier of Gatineau was named to the CIS men’s volleyball all-rookie team. The Rideau Canoe Club has received a grant of $76,200 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to upgrade its Mooney’s Bay race course for the 2015 Canadian sprint canoe kayak championships Aug. 25-30 and the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival on June 25-28.
