GUILT-FREE DOUGHNUTS

Free treats from Almonte baker

- LAURA ROBIN OTTAWA CITIZEN

Free doughnuts — does it get any better than that? Actually, in Almonte on Friday, it does.

Not only will Ed Atwell, owner of a company called Healthy Food Technologies, be giving one free doughnut to anyone who comes in, they’ll be doughnuts without the guilt. He has invented a process to make doughnuts with 50 to 70 per cent less fat and about half the calories and, as of this week, he’s even offer wholewheat ones. And they taste terrific.

“Friday is International Doughnut Day,” notes Atwell. “We want to have fun and to thank our customers, but we really believe that any person who tries our doughnuts is going to leave saying, ‘That was the best doughnut I ever had.’ “

Atwell has run his business on the outskirts of Almonte for two years, starting by selling 150 to 200 doughnuts on Fridays and now selling 3,000 to 4,000 most weekends.

On Monday, he debuted his wholewheat doughnut and started opening weekdays. “As far as we know, there’s no other wholewheat doughnut in Canada,” says Atwell. “People who want wholewheat want healthy, and most doughnuts are not because of their fat content.”

Atwell announced the new wholewheat doughnuts on his Facebook page Monday and already they outsold his regular ones. So far, he offers them in apple fritter, honey-glazed-toasted-coconut, Dutchie and cinnamon-sugar-strawbery-jam-filled types, but says he’ll keep adding with new flavours. One dozen cost $10.

Healthy Food Technologies, open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, is at 25 Industrial Rd.; if you approach Almonte from the east via March Road/Road 49, turn left at the Tim Hortons.
