India hails solar powered airport

-

India has unveiled what it says is the world’s first airport run completely on solar power. The Cochin International Airport in Kerala state, the third busiest in the country, will deploy 46,000 solar panels across 45 acres of land near its cargo area, making the operation “absolutely power neutral.” The airport has been using solar power since 2013, but new capacity will make it capable of generating 18 million units of solar power annually — or enough to power 10,000 homes for one year. The project is expected to offset carbon emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes over the next 25 years, the Telegraph said.
