Where the parties stand on Syrian refugees

- MARK KENNEDY

CONSERVATIVES

The Tories announced in January the government would bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees within three years, in addition to 1,300 previously promised. In the current campaign, leader Stephen Harper promised that if re-elected, the Tories would increase that goal even further. They promised an additional 10,000 refugees within four years. Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said Friday the government would accelerate refugee processing to get people to Canada quicker.

NDP

Leader Tom Mulcair says an NDP government would sponsor 10,000 Syrian refugees into Canada by the end of 2015. The NDP would appoint a Syrian refugee co-ordinator within government, pulling resources from various departments. There would be an increased “presence” of Canada’s diplomatic and immigration officials in the region to accelerate processing of refugees. Private sponsorships would be fast-tracked and there would be no cap on those sponsorships.

LIBERALS

Leader Justin Trudeau says Canada “must immediately accept 25,000 Syrian refugees.” A Liberal government would sponsor those refugees. The cost of the plan, which Liberal immigration critic John McCallum says would be “significant” but not “gargantuan,” will be revealed in the party’s platform later in the campaign.
