The doors at twin Glebe rental town houses that were supposed to be move-in ready a week ago are finally being opened to nearly a dozen university students who had to scramble to find temporary accommodations in Ottawa.

Students were left in the lurch on Sept. 1 when they arrived at the town houses, at Fourth Avenue and Bank Street, to find both unfinished.

The houses, owned by Takyan Consulting & Development, weren’t ready because contractor work on them had been unexpectedly delayed, property manager Rakan Abushaar previously told the Citizen.

A second move-in date was set for last Friday, but that deadline also came and went without the students unpacking at the town houses.

The homes remained empty through most of the Labour Day long weekend, but a visit to the property on Monday revealed that several students had started to move into the homes and their multiple units, and some tenants were now living at the property.

One resident told the Citizen that contractors had been there every day and that the units are becoming livable, though they are in various stages of renovation. It’s still believed that at least one unit is uninhabitable.

Takyan had told all the students that they would be reimbursed for the hotel costs incurred while they waited to get into the town houses.

Fourth-year Carleton University student Daniel Chivu had told the Citizen on Sunday he hadn’t received any written agreements on whether he would be reimbursed for hotel costs.

Multiple attempts to contact Abushaar over the weekend were unsuccessful.
