A week after he was found wandering near Shawville, Treize the boxer mix is making progress on the long road back to health.

Named because he was found on Friday the Thirteenth, the fouryear-old male weighed less than half of what he should when he arrived at the shelter of the SPCA de l’Outaouais.

He fell asleep in the arms of a technician while they gave him intravenous fluids.

He lost more weight during that first weekend, but “now he has started to gain weight, he is more steady on his feet, (and) he can remain standing for five or 10 minutes,” said Karine Dunigan of the SPCA.

Blood tests didn’t show any signs of disease.

It will take months of care before the SPCA will be ready to let Treize go, but for now he’s at the home of the mother of one of their technicians.

“He’s in a house. There is always someone home,” she said. “He has really good morale, he’s happy, he is wagging his tail.”

The dog ’s origin is still a mystery. He didn’t show any signs of mistreatment other than being emaciated, and the SPCA staff think he may have strayed from home and become lost, possibly travelling a long distance while trying to find enough food to stay alive.

The SPCA has had donations of cash, food, blankets and dog toys for Treize.

It welcomes donations at www. spca-outaouais.org/don or by calling 819-243-2004.
