CREATIVE DIY DECOR
Book offers tips on trees
1 Start at the top
Position the tree so the best side is showing forward, then dress it in this order — lights, garland, ornaments, tree topper, skirt (or other under dressing).
2 Consider scale
To give it balance, divide the tree into horizontal thirds and match ornament size with the section: small on top; medium in the middle; larger at the bottom. “This rule progression helps create a dramatic sense of gravity and tension,” Brown says.
3 Think in triangles
Every major object should have a counterweight diagonally across from it in either direction, up or down. “Balance objects in trios to build strong, dynamic compositions,” Brown advises.
4 Break the rules
Use these guidelines, Brown says, but recognize there are exceptions. Spreading samesize ornaments all over the tree might flatten the composition, for instance, but it also adds interesting texture. Or add a large ornament next to small ones to make a visual statement.
5 Readjust
Tweak your tree until it looks right, stepping back often to check your work. “Decorating is thoughtful work, but it’s also incredibly exciting and satisfying,” Brown says.
6 A word on lights
The trend is 100 lights for every vertical foot of tree, but Brown favours one-third to one-half that amount for a less commercial look that is more elegant and sophisticated. Test strands first; work with the lights on to better see what you’re doing, and start at the top, working down in a spiral and weaving in and out of branch tips.
