67’s snap a two-game losing streak with win over Oshawa

-

The Ottawa 67’s are back on track after compiling a convincing victory over the Memorial Cup champs, the Oshawa Generals.

The victory over Oshawa was a welcome return to form. The 67’s are now near the end of a lengthy six-game road trip which will come to a close in Kingston on Wednesday against the east leading Frontenacs. The trip began with two strong victories: 6-3 over Niagara and 6-0 over Hamilton. But then they lost 6-3 to Peterborough and 4-2 in a re-match with Hamilton.

The evening on Sunday began with a bang about 11 seconds into the opening frame with quick goal by Trent Mallette who scored for the second straight game and for the fourth time in the last five. He was assisted by Sam Studnicka.

That was how the period stood until midway through the frame when the ever dangerous Dante Salituro scored at the 10:55 mark, helped by the captain, Travis Konecny, and Austen Keating.

The period ended 2-0 and while Ottawa escaped with the lead, the Generals were no doubt feeling a bit unlucky having 11 shots on goal to six for the 67’s.

That luck changed early in the second when Oshawa’s Matt Mistele scored six minutes in.

It was looking like Oshawa was pressing, but a power play halfway through the period led to an Ottawa goal by Jeremiah Addison with his 10th of the season, assisted by Salituro and Konecny, and that seemed to snuff out the Oshawa pressure. Nathan Todd closed out the scoring in the second with his fourth.

The third period belonged to Salituro, who completed a hat trick for a four point night. He now has 15 goals overall. Konecny assisted on five of six 67’s goals. He now has five goals and 28 assists for 33 points and is among the top 10 OHL scoring leaders.

Overall Oshawa outshot Ottawa 34-27. Leo Lazarev was a rock in the net, making 32 saves for the win.

The 67’s return to TD Place on Friday against the Sarnia Sting.

Ottawa’s record is now 13-9-1-0.
