CHEO online tool kit helps kids with emotions

- TIFFANY LEWIS

A free interactive tool kit to help children manage their emotions and deal with stress was launched Tuesday by the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

MindMasters 2 — intended for children aged four to nine — is a program that includes relaxation and coping techniques to help kids develop positive mental health. The kit is available free online and includes videos, audio tracks and interactive activities. The program can be used in various settings, including schools, homes and community programs.

“Our hope is that mental health — and good mental health and developing strategies to have good mental health — becomes part of the culture of the school, as opposed to events,” said Brent Smith, principal of Berrigan Elementary School in Barrhaven, where the program was launched.

Previously, Smith said, his school had to take a less proactive route when dealing with children and mental health.

“Instead of being proactive ahead of time and giving kids the opportunity to recognize stresses and to cope with it individually, in some situations we dealt with it when it became an issue, unfortunately,” Smith said.

The effects of using some techniques in the program can show almost instantaneous changes in a child, said Dr. Michael Chang, a psychiatrist at CHEO.

“Even in the moment, doing it with a person, some of these skills will make (children) feel calmer,” he said.

So what, exactly, are the types of activities children would be doing when using MindMasters 2?

One example is called the “my special place” exercise to reduce stress. Children are asked to listen to an audio tape that guides them on how to relax, then they are asked to visualize a “special place” that makes them feel happy. The children are also asked to draw this place or even bring in a photo or toy beforehand that helps them visualize, further illustrating the theme.

Cheng also has some techniques for parents and caregivers to ensure a healthy child.

“Spend one-on-one time with your kid. Put down the devices when you’re with your kid. Talk to your kids and listen to them about what they’re feeling. And whatever they’re feeling, you just validate those feelings.”

Even in the moment, doing it with a person, some of these skills will make (children) feel calmer.
