The long-term care system of the future
The Bruyère Research Institute proudly hosts the Bruyère Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI). The Bruyère CLRI aims to enhance the quality of care provided to long-term care residents, increase the knowledge and skills of our workforce, and assist in shaping the long-term care system of the future.
The CLRI creates relevant and practical tools in both official languages to share with long-term care homes, health planners and academics all across Ontario.
“Homes are doing their best to meet the needs of the residents with the limited resources they have, so it can be a challenge for them to consider innovation in research, learning, and care delivery. That’s where the CLRI comes in,” explains Zsofia Orosz, manager of the Bruyère CLRI where team development and knowledge sharing are top of mind.
A great example of CLRI’s commitment and innovative nature is the Oral Care Assessment and Education in Long-Term Care project. To help francophone nurses and personal support workers assess and monitor the oral health of long-term care residents, the Bruyère CLRI and La Cité translated a tool English-speaking health care professional use. Staff and families can also refer to a new, bilingual short video on oral care. Optimal oral care ensures that long-term care residents can enjoy their meals, get their nutrition and improve their quality of life.
Whether it is specialized units in longterm care homes, end-of-life communications or clinical nursing leadership education models, the CLRI is involved in several other projects geared at enhancing lives and transforming care. The Bruyère CLRI is one of three CLRIs – the other two being the Baycrest CLRI and the Schlegel CLRI – supported by the Government of Ontario until March 2017.
