Man dies when car struck by SUV on Hwy. 50

A man in his 50s was killed when the car he was driving was rearended on Highway 50 in Gatineau on Sunday. Quebec provincial police said the man was alone in a small car that was stopped in the right lane near the Boulevard de La Vérendrye exit when it was hit from behind by an SUV just before 6 a.m. The driver and the passengers in the SUV were not injured. The identity of the man who died was not released.

Man taken to hospital after apartment fire

A man was treated in hospital after a fire broke out in his apartment above a bar on Preston Street early Saturday morning. The man was not seriously injured, said a friend who was at the apartment later Saturday morning. His friend was sleeping when the fire broke out in the middle of the night, said the man, who did not want to be identified. There did not appear to be any damage to the Borgo Bar on the ground floor. Police closed the streets surroundin­g the building for several hours, but they were reopened by 10 a.m.

Woman dies in vehicle rollover

A woman died after the pickup truck she was driving rolled over near the town of Russell, Ont., on Saturday. Police said it was just after 10 a.m. on County Road 3 when the woman’s Dodge pickup veered off the road and rolled over near North Wing Road in North Dundas Township. Police identified the driver as Louise Hoogsteen, 57, of Russell. Emergency crews extricated her from her vehicle and sent her to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The investigat­ion continues and the OPP are asking anyone with informatio­n to call 1-888-310-1122.

Marathon skier suffers cardiac arrest

A man participat­ing in the Canadian Ski Marathon in west Quebec died while out on the trail, the organizati­on announced on its Facebook page Saturday evening. The skier, who has not been identified, suffered a cardiac arrest, according to the CSM. Medical staff reached the man in distress, but their efforts were unsuccessf­ul. The CSM is a two-day, 160-km skiing marathon with groomed trails that stretch between Lachute and Gatineau. The organizati­on said on Facebook it is mourning the loss of one its skiers and that the man’s family had been notified. “The entire marathon family and all our skiers are with his family in thoughts,” the post reads.
