BIG WINNERS Tennis player Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and triathlete Joanna Brown of Carp were thousands of miles apart Sunday, but they both had heartwarmi­ng experience­s. Dabrowski and China’s Yifan Xu started the Miami Open unseeded, but defeated four seeded teams (No. 8, 2, 4 and 3) to win the women’s doubles title and collect $285,170 US. Dabrowski’s biggest victory improved her WTA ranking to No. 19. Brown captured her first World Cup triathlon medal, earning silver in New Plymouth, New Zealand, missing the gold by one second.

EXTRA SPECIAL Goulbourn Skating Club’s Jack Fan is a double world figure skating champion, winning the men’s M-4B_20-38 singles gold and the ice dance ID-T-2 gold with clubmate Katie Xu at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. In her women’s F-3A-15-20 singles competitio­n, Xu also captured the silver. Cross-country skier Mike Roy earned the gold in men’s M6 2.5-kilometre classic race (12 minutes, 48.10 seconds) and silver in the M08 one-kilometre freestyle race (5:28.00). Snowshoe racer Kevin Dooks was the lone triple medal-medal winner with silver showings in the men’s M06 400 metres (2:37.23), M3 800 metres (6:35.00) and M2 4x400metre relay (6:54.40).

ROCKLAND STARS Ecole Secondaire Catholique L’Escale of Rockland was the No. 13 seed entering the OFSAA girls’ A/AA hockey championsh­ip in Stratford, but it wasn’t unlucky. Instead, they exited as the undefeated and first-time champion. After winning three pool games, L’Escale downed Grimsby 1-0 in the quarter-finals, topseeded St. Michael of Stratford 3-2 in the semifinals and All Saints of Whitby 5-4 in the final. Immaculata Saints lost their bronze-medal game at the OFSAA boys’ A/ AA hockey championsh­ip in Fort Francis, but earned the antique bronze medal.

ON TRACK Ottawa Lions Track and Field Club’s Wendy Alexis was disappoint­ed with her 60-metre final (one-hour delay, illness, lack of sleep), but happy with her 200-metre showing (seasonal-best time), winning two silver medals in the women’s 60-64 class at the world masters indoor athletics championsh­ips in Daegu, Korea, in respective times of 8.89 and 29.26 seconds. Clubmate Serge Faucher picked up a silver in the men’s 50-54 4x200-metre relay. Former South Carleton High School runner Paul Osland won the men’s 50-54 800 and 1,500 metres and anchored the Canadian men’s 45-49 4x200metre relay team to a silver.

NO STOPPING NAKKERTOK For the eighth consecutiv­e year, Nakkertok Nordic Ski Club won the club aggregate points championsh­ip at the Canadian cross-country skiing championsh­ips in Canmore, AB. Six Nakkertok skiers placed in the top three in the individual year-ofbirth aggregate standings: Katherine Stewart-Jones, first, senior women U23 and third, senior women; Zoe Williams, first, junior women 1997; Claire Grall-Johnson, second, junior women 1997; Tove Halvorsen, third, junior girls, 1999; Pierre GrallJohns­on, second, junior boys 1999; and Ben Milley, first, junior boys 2000. Aidan Kirkham was third in the men’s university championsh­ip and helped Carleton men place second overall.

LOOKING WAY AHEAD Will Ottawa bid for the 2041 Canada Summer Games, when it will again be Ontario’s turn to stage the twoweek, multi-sport festival? It might have a chance. The Niagara Region was recently selected over Ottawa, Waterloo and Sudbury for the 2021 Games. Ottawa and Niagara were runners-up for the 2001 Games to London ... Rideau Curling Club skip Howard Rajala and his rink of Rich Moffatt, Chris Fulton and Paul Madden lost the goldmedal final at the Canadian senior men’s championsh­ip 7-6 in an extra end to George White of Alberta ... Ashbury College’s Noah Kirkwood will follow in the footsteps of Ottawa friend Corey Johnson (2015) and play in the Biosteel All Canadian High School Basketball Game on Monday in Toronto.
