The Gatineau Olympiques’ miracle comeback ended in heartbreak.

The Olympiques, trying to become one of the rare teams in QMJHL history to come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series, were eliminated from the post-season Tuesday night after a devastating 5-4 OT loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in Game 7 of the series on the road at the Centre 200.

Cape Breton’s Jordan Ty Fournier scored at 2:30 of the overtime on Gatineau goalie Tristan Berube to send the Olympiques packing from the playoffs in Round 1.

It would have been a great story if Gatineau had been able to pull of the upset, but despite a strong effort, the Olympiques just couldn’t get it done.

The Olympiques even had to battle the odds to get the game to OT. Trailing 3-1 after the first period, Gatineau came storming back from the two-goal deficit.

Alexandre Landreville and Anthony Gagnon scored in a span of eight seconds midway through the second period to tie it up 3-3 for the Olympiques.

Earlier, Shawn Boudrias had got Gatineau on the board to open the scoring at 12:22 of the first. With Gatineau trailing 4-3 going in the third, Yakov Trenin scored on the power play for the Olympiques at 13:06 to send the game to OT.

Unfortunately, that’s where the magic ended for the Olympiques and now they’ll have to pack their bags to start thinking about next year. Cape Breton goalie Kyle Jessiman made 26 saves in the win.
