Refreshing makeover from Westend Bath and Kitchen – just in time for spring

Alta Vista bungalow kitchen goes from ‘drab’ to ‘fab’

There comes a time when the homey little kitchen you’ve been living with for the past 25 years begins showing its age. The worn edges of the cupboards, the marks on the countertops, the cracks in the floor tiles from countless trips between fridge, stove and sink all speak to a life well-lived. But at some point, enough is enough. It’s time for a makeover.

That’s about where Alta Vista homeowners Janet and Brian were with their own bungalow kitchen when they visited the Westend Bath and Kitchen showroom last fall. They had last updated the kitchen of their 60-year-old house in the mid-1990s, and the time was right to “spruce things up.”

“The kitchen was really looking drab and old-fashioned,” Janet said. “We wanted to brighten it up a bit and modernize it. We’d heard a couple of people mention they were happy with the work Westend did for them, and we had read the ads in the Citizen, but we also went online to do some research before we went out to the showroom.”

During a follow-up visit to the couple’s home, Westend designer Kendra Brunet and store manager Alan Carriere would take room measurements and learn more about what the clients wanted to see in their new kitchen. Everything would be put together into a comprehensive design and cost estimate, and eventually a contract. This aspect of their work is one of Westend Bath and Kitchen’s known strengths in the industry, and was a major factor in Janet and Brian’s decision to go with the company.

“They were very professional and business-like,” Brian said. “The contract was well-written, and Westend had all the licences. If anything went wrong, they would be legally responsible for the work.”

“We felt we could rely on them,” Janet added. “And we appreciated Kendra’s advice on the colour and design of the decor. She had good taste.”

Working with her clients’ desire for a classic aesthetic, Brunet created a delicately nuanced palette of colours, patterns and textures that would play to the room’s strong, natural light. Everything was designed to work in harmony. She selected a beautiful off-white (Winter White) for the cabinets, a light granite-patterned laminate for the countertops, and a modern porcelain floor tile pattern to add just a bit of dash. She also replaced the garish over-sink fluorescent fixture with a pair of stylish and efficient pot lights so that, day or night, the overall colour scheme of the kitchen remained warm and inviting.

Janet and Brian said they were amazed by how little they were inconvenienced throughout the renovation work, and said they appreciated installer Mo Savard’s meticulous attention to detail and considerate work ethic. Once before leaving at the end of the day, he temporarily reinstalled the old countertop and sink just so that the retired couple would not have to carry their supper dishes down to the laundry tub for washing-up. It was typical Mo.

For the homeowners, it was service like this that made them glad they chose Westend to give them the new kitchen they wanted.

“You spend a lot of your life in the kitchen,” Janet said. “It puts me in a brighter mood when I’m working in there now, with the new cupboards and all. It’s much more attractive.”

The Westend Bath & Kitchen showroom, located at 1660 Woodward Dr., is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also visit www.westendbathandkitchen.com, or call 613-226-7701 to schedule a free estimate.
