Westend Bath and Kitchen turns vision into reality for longtime customers

New kitchen layout better for meal preparation

- BRIAN McCULLOUGH

When Carol and Shirley moved to a 1960s-vintage split-level home in Riverside Park a year ago, one of the things they brought with them from their old country house in rural Kanata was the telephone number for Westend Bath and Kitchen.

The couple knew when they bought their new house that the kitchen and bathrooms would need work to make the home more livable. It only made sense to call on the company they have been

turning to for their renovations for more than 20 years.

“We booked with Westend Bath and Kitchen as soon as we bought the house,” Carol said.

They even waited for Westend contractor Dave Edwards to become available. He had done excellent renovations for them at their rural home four years earlier, and they appreciated his level of craftsmanship.

“It was worth waiting for him,” Shirley said. “We liked the bathroom he did for us in our old house so much that we wanted the same thing again, but adapted to this house.”

Westend designer Kendra Brunet agreed that while her clients loved the bones of their new place, the most important rooms of the house just weren’t up to snuff. For the main bathroom, Brunet sourced materials that were the same as, or similar to, what had been used in the previous renovation. The attractive, shaker-style vanity was done in a natural birch finish, and covered with a laminate countertop in a beautiful granite pattern. The Armstrong CushionStep vinyl sheet flooring will be nice on the feet when stepping out of the new soaker tub from Mirolin. Everything is easy to clean.

Brunet worked her design smarts on the smaller bathroom to create something fresh, spacious and functional for her clients in the small space available. The key was to maximize the footprint of the shower without crowding anything else out. She selected a light-coloured shower base and wall tiles, and installed a clear glass door and overhead light to brighten things up and make the space seem larger. The result is stunning.

In the kitchen, the major complaint was that the poor layout of the major appliances made meal preparation awkward. Brunet consulted closely with her clients on the redesign to create better traffic flow, and to bring everything into better reach. The UltraCeramic luxury vinyl flooring from Centura gives the look of tile, but is more resilient to cracking or chipping. The Cambria Quartz countertops have bits of blue in the quartz pattern that give a lovely appearance of flowers in a stone meadow.

“It’s an amazing difference,” Brunet said. “Moving the stove to the outside wall, and pushing the fridge up against the pantry created much more counter space. Getting rid of the boxed fluorescent ceiling fixture, and replacing it with low-profile pot lights made the ceiling feel higher. The under-cabinet LEDs add a nice ambience.”

Carol and Shirley said they could not be happier with their latest Westend experience.

“Oh, the kitchen is just gorgeous,” Carol said. “We’ve gained light, space and beauty all in the same perimeter we had before. We just love it.”

“We had a vision for everything,” Shirley said, “and Westend made it happen for us.”
