Show No. 24: Catch Me If You Can Where: Merivale High School Director: Cynthia Wood Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts and get ready for take off. Merivale High School’s Production of Catch Me If You Can was not just any ordinary flight in the skies but a glamorous performance with popping dance numbers and fabulous lights.

Based on real-life events and well-known for the 2002 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the musical opened in 2011 and was nominated for four Tony Awards. The journey follows Frank Abagnale Jr., a suave young con man who is cornered at the airport by FBI agent Carl Hanratty and his team. Frank proceeds to tell the full story of how he left home after ending up in a distraught battle in court with his parents fighting for custody over him. He then led FBI agents on what seemed to be a wild-goose chase across the country, posing as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. He cashed in millions of dollars through fake cheques and lived a lifestyle filled with women. After falling in love with nurse Brenda Strong, Frank told her the truth, which eventually got him caught.

In keeping with the play’s heavy ’60s theme, the actors were typecast in typical roles of a ’60s television show. Musical numbers were detailed and fun, with remarkable student-driven choreography and committed dancers. The vibrant lighting and a simple set offered a chic mod feel, once more reflecting the time period. Set changes were quick, and the show ran smoothly under the organization of the stage management crew.

Ryan Pedersen played the swoon-worthy leading man, Frank Abagnale Jr., with irresistible charm, engaging the audience with every word he spoke. With clever expressions and solid characterization, Pedersen offered the appealing persona his character needed. Frank’s love interest, Brenda Strong, was portrayed by Zoe Carter, who put forth capable vocals with her graceful voice. The pair presented many awe-worthy moments and alluring chemistry.

The no-fun and lonely FBI agent, Hanratty, was played by Dexter Hunter-Laroche, who established himself as an unexpectedly entertaining character. Hunter-Laroche proved to be a strong supporting character, working well with his co-stars and offering a witty performance. One of his most distinguished moments was during the musical number Don’t Break the Rules, where he gave polished vocals with ease.

Ben Turpin played Frank Abagnale Sr. with skill, showing his character’s age with savvy technique. Arielle Voght took the role of Frank’s mother, Paula Abagnale, delivering her lines with a well-polished French accent.

The comedic character of Brenda’s mother, Carol Strong, was played by Darcie WatsonLaird, who entertained the audience with her exaggerated accent and humorous facial expressions. Beejan Afkham gave a notable solo on the trumpet in his role as Roger Strong, delivering high notes with clarity and the skilled improvisation required for New Orleans jazz, drawing inspiration from famous jazz musician Louis Armstrong.

The impressive lighting was designed, installed and operated by Thomas Dunnigan and offered a pop of colour and mood to each scene. Putting careful thought into the theme of a ’60s television show, it boldly reflected the time period and offered a fruity feel. The dedicated sound crew ensured that there were no complications with mics and sound cues, ensuring precision throughout. The orchestra was able to hit the quick notes of the fast-paced jazz tunes with accuracy. Costumes and makeup were period appropriate and playful, matching up to the dazzling mood set by the rest of the show.

With strong student direction in the tech categories and a capably talented cast, Merivale High School’s performance of Catch Me If You Can was a first-class performance with refreshing musical numbers and an entertaining story.
