We can’t run events from fear

Re: Would you rather not have security on Canada Day? July 5.

I disagree with Phil Gurski’s opinion that the extra stringent security that ruined Canada Day for many is “the new normal” and we should “get used to it.” He admitted that the threat level was no higher than in past years. You cannot point to incidents that happen in other parts of the world and say that justifies living in constant fear.

If you look up “Terrorism in Canada,” you will see that the 1980s were a much more dangerous time. The last embassy attack in Ottawa was in 1985. There have been scattered incidents but nothing on a scale that justifies the current state of fear. I say we should live our lives normally; otherwise the terrorists have already won.
