Bishop runs to new Canadian 800m record

-

Runner Melissa Bishop lowered her Canadian record in the 800 metres by 0.01 seconds at the Monaco Diamond League event on Friday. The 28-year-old Eganville, Ont., native, near Windsor, ran 1:57.01 and finished fifth in the field. It was a remarkable race in that four national records fell. Bishop’s fast time comes just two weeks before the world championships open at London Stadium. Bishop, who finished fourth at the Rio Olympics last summer and is the defending world outdoor silver medallist, trailed South Africa’s Caster Semenya, who won in 1:55.27. Francine Niyonsaba, Ajee Wilson and Sifan Hassan also finished ahead of Bishop, in that order. New national records were also set for South Africa, Burundi and the United States.
