Impressive field for CP Women’s Open

- BRUCE GARRIOCH

There will be no shortage of talent at the CP Women’s Open next week at the Ottawa Hunt Club.

Not only have 92 of the top 100 players on the 2017 LPGA Tour money list — including defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn and Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls — announced their intention to compete, the tournament has also given an exemption to Ottawa native Grace St. Germain, a member of Golf Canada’s national amateur team.

Of course, all eyes will be on Henderson — a member of the Hunt Club ranked No. 5 on the LPGA money list — when she plays on her home turf for the first time in her professional career.

“The CP Women’s Open will feature a strong LPGA Tour field along with the very best rising talents in Canadian and international golf,” tournament director Bill Paul said.

“Ottawa-area golf fans are sure to be treated to an unbelievable showcase of world-class golf.”

Henderson won’t be the only Canadian professional in the field.

Alena Sharp of Hamilton, Sherbrooke’s MaudeAimee LeBlanc, Quebec City’s Anne-Catherine Tanguay, Calgary’s Jennifer Ha, Augusta James of Bath, Ont., Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C., Orangeville’s Brittany Marchand and Charlottetown’s Lorie Kane will also be on hand to compete.

Australian Katherine Kirk, who came back from a six-stroke deficit to win when the tournament was last held at the Ottawa Hunt Club in 2008, will also be in the field.

There will be 160 players on hand, with the winner taking home $337,500 from the US$2.25 million purse. There will be a qualifier round for the final four spots held Monday at the Camelot Golf and Country Club.
