Plan ahead, Quebec police tell hikers after 12 calls for help

The Sûreté du Québec has issued a plea to hikers who may be planning to head into Gatineau Park and other wooded areas to see the fall colours to plan carefully and take steps to stay out of trouble.

Police said they’ve already responded to more than 12 calls for help in the National Capital Commission’s massive public park involving hikers in situations that could have been avoided.

Any excursion into the forest, or any remote area, is not without risk and requires adequate preparation, police say.

Police ask that hikers ensure that their trek is realistic and that they plan an outing according to their physical condition. Once a destination has been determined, hikers should prepare by making a detailed itinerary, determining the distances separating points of interest and the expected arrival time or date at each location.

Police also ask that those heading into the woods leave a copy of their itinerary with a relative or friend.

Police also suggest that hikers bring a detailed, up-to-date map of the area and brush up on mapreading skills. Navigation tools, included GPS devices and compasses, are also recommended.

Anyone venturing into the woods is also asked to verify weather forecasts ahead of time. If the forecast is likely to pose a risk to your safety, do not leave.

In addition, police would like hikers to bring a communication tool such as a satellite phone or a portable radio. A survival kit consisting of at least one set of basic tools, first-aid items, a knife, waterproof matches, flashlights and a whistle.
