HELLO, FAREWELL, HELLO

-

Some musicians who have retired ... and returned.

FRANK SINATRA

Sinatra drew a lot of tears when he told fans he was leaving the music scene in 1971. But two years later, he returned with a TV special and a new album called Ol’ Blue Eyes. He continued doing it his way until the mid-1990s.

BARBRA STREISAND

Babs announced her retirement in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd in 2000. Or at least that’s what we thought. In 2006, the legendary singer launched a comeback tour — and she’s been back ever since. Her latest album is 2016’s Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway.

GARTH BROOKS

Apparently “retiring” means you take nine years off, then go on complete a residency in Las Vegas followed by several albums and a world tour. Or at least that’s what it means (meant?) to country star Garth Brooks.

OZZY OSBOURNE

There’s just no getting off the crazy train for Ozzy, who called it quits on the heavy metal biz back in 1992. Three years later, he returned, saying he was bored. Just last fall he announced a second retirement tour (after his band Black Sabbath’s final tour), even then admitting he doesn’t think he’ll truly retire.

TINA TURNER

Why did Tina Turner return for a 50th-anniversary tour — and a memorable Grammy Awards performance with Beyoncé — in 2008, after she had supposedly hung up her dancing shoes in 2000? We’re assuming the pop diva’s love (of music) did indeed have something to do with it.

CHER

Do you believe in life after retirement? Cher sure does. Six years after her 2002 farewell tour, she launched a three-year residency in Vegas, followed by a new album. These days she still performs — when she’s not bashing Trump on Twitter.
