TURN ON, TUNE IN AND ZONE OUT

-

Another day, another globally inspired lifestyle philosophy. In the last few years, we’ve embraced hygge, the Danish idea of cosy simplicity; còsagach, the Scottish concept of staying snug and sheltered; and lagom, the Swedish principle of enjoying balance in life.

Now, there’s niksen, what the Dutch call doing absolutely nothing — and not feeling any guilt about it. Quite different from sloth, the goal of niksen is to relieve stress, recharge and prevent burnout. It’s about slowing down, letting your mind wander and challenging the cult of busyness.

Want to implement the niksen doctrine? Embrace purposeless activities “like staring out the window, hanging out, or listening to music,” Carolien Hamming, an anti-stress coach at CSR Centrum, told Woolly Magazine.

Another benefit: The Atlantic reports that daydreaming can spark creativity.
