New-Teeth-in-a-Day procedure gave patient a new lease on life

- IRIS WINSTON

Malcolm Volmer often has a smile on his face these days. This, said the retired healthcare administrator, is just one of the positive after-effects of his decision to invest in the New-Teeth-in-a-Day procedure.

“I had been having trouble with my teeth for more than a year,” he said, noting that this was in spite of seeing a dentist at regular intervals to have his teeth checked and cleaned.

“My teeth — especially the upper teeth — were getting loose and, after going in for deep cleaning treatment, I was told the prognosis for my upper teeth was not good. I was continually fighting bacteria because of the deep pockets that had formed.”

Part of his dental treatment six years earlier had included inserting two implants. One of these had loosened, so was causing additional problems.

He had already decided that he did not want dentures. “I have a good friend who had dentures after an accident earlier in his life. He told me some of the problems he had. And I just didn’t want to be putting my teeth in a jar every night.”

This was when he began checking out New-Teeth-ina-Day. “I talked to my dentist and researched it online,” Volmer said. “At first I was a bit apprehensive, because I didn’t understand why it was so expensive.”

The cost is about $30,000 to $35,000, for either the upper or lower jaw. (This is actually considerably lower than the $50,000 or more for the traditional method of inserting an implant for each tooth.)

After Volmer consulted one of the dentists at the Sedation Dental Group about the procedure, he decided that this was the best direction for him.

“I had already been on a long, expensive road and was still having trouble. I realized that having the top set of teeth replaced would reduce any problems right away and, after being walked through the procedure and getting some insight into the amount of work involved, I felt really comfortable. Although you get teeth in a day, there’s six months of work to be done before that.”

“It just sounded right for me,” he added. “My wife and I have always considered our health a priority. And we give special account to teeth, because problems with your teeth affect so much else in terms of diet and other things.”

Volmer, therefore, took the plunge in October 2016 and had the teeth in his upper jaw replaced. The procedure involved deep sedation for the one-time surgery, while the teeth in his upper jaw were removed and four implants were inserted to act as roots to secure the new set of permanent teeth. Next, the new teeth were anchored to the implants. When he awoke, his new teeth were in place.

“I was amazed at how easy it was,” he said. “I was expecting bleeding when I woke, but there was hardly any bleeding or pain. I think I took a couple of painkillers later, but I didn’t really need them.

“The hardest part was that I had to be on soft food for a week or two afterwards. I also had to stop smoking before having the work done and was told to lose 10 pounds. I wasn’t a heavy smoker and managed to quit. I also improved my weight. So those efforts, combined with my new teeth, made me healthier. And I’m very pleased with my new teeth and am able to eat anything I want now and I really am smiling a lot more than I used to. That’s for sure.”

Simply put, Volmer’s NewTeeth-in-a-Day procedure has been a major factor in improving his quality of life.

In general, following the procedure, patients are able to eat a wider variety of food and most of them become more conscious about the nutritional quality of their meals. In addition, because their new permanent teeth are made of titanium, they never have to worry about cavities again.
