Canada fell 83-71 to Iran on Monday in men’s competitio­n at the 2018 world wheelchair basketball championsh­ips in Hamburg. The result left Canada (2-1) in second place in pool A after preliminar­y round competitio­n. Canada will next play in a crossover match on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the quarter-finals. Tournament scoring leader Patrick Anderson led Canada with 34 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. David Eng added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Walk-on freshman QB to start for Minnesota

University of Minnesota has tabbed true freshman walk-on Zack Annexstad as the starting quarterbac­k to open the season. Gophers coach P.J. Fleck announced after practice on Monday that Annexstad will be behind centre on Aug. 30 against New Mexico State. Fleck said he’s not planning a rotation between Annexstad and redshirt freshman Tanner Morgan, but the coach said he expects Morgan to see some action this year.

Hawks sign Hamilton, Poythress to add depth

The rebuilding Atlanta Hawks have added depth by signing guard-forward Daniel Hamilton and forward Alex Poythress. Poythress was signed to a twoway contract, so the former Kentucky player will split his time with the Hawks’ G League Erie team. Hamilton averaged 2.0 points in six games with Oklahoma City last season while on a two-way contract with the Thunder. He spent most of the season with the G League Oklahoma City Blue. Poythress averaged a point in 25 games with Indiana last season.
