It’s all hands on deck — in a good way — at City View Retirement Community

- Izabela Syzdlo

At City View Retirement Community, it isn’t unusual to see owners Tom Gallivan and Alan Clausi on-site. In fact, a few weeks ago when the facility’s terrace needed modifications, Gallivan enlisted his family’s help and hammered away — with input from residents. The family-oriented approach, he says, takes on deep meaning at City View. “The residents were giving us very good directions on what we should be doing,” says Gallivan, laughing. “That’s the thing about being a locally owned and operated facility, we are able to get involved, introduce ourselves to the residents and meet their needs right away, whether modifying programs or a terrace.” Adds Clausi, “It creates such a family atmosphere when people are getting what they need and when they are happy.” Conveniently located near the intersection of Meadowlands Drive and Woodroffe Avenue in the heart of Ottawa West, City View, which opened its doors in 2016, offers retirement living, assisted living and short-term care packages. This October, it will add a memory living unit, geared especially toward those with memory issues caused by conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Gallivan says City View’s approach to retirement living ensures residents live a very fulfilled life, no matter which living style they select. “When people think of retirement living, they think you are just sitting around,” he says. “Meanwhile, as I walked into City View this morning, there was a university course under way in the pub, a seminar in the café, a group waiting to go see an outdoor exhibit and our staff ensuring everyone was happy. Retirement living here is vibrant.” In addition to catering to the needs of its residents, City View has also established itself as part of the local community. Minutes away from several shops and malls, close to the City of Ottawa Library and Centrepointe Theatre, and easily accessible by public transit, City View is attracting various community groups and organizations. “We are a real hub for our community and we have many associations that come in, from local choirs and performers to churches and education institutions that facilitate workshops in our space,” says Clausi. “The only thing we ask is that they include residents, and they are happy to. We have made a true connection with the community.” Terry Cornforth is a City View resident. Cornforth says his experience has been positive from the minute he arrived to start the new chapter in his life of retirement living. “This has been most rewarding and enjoyable time, and I look forward to it continuing on the same wave,” he says.
